Handy safety tips for your fireplaces

There’s nothing like a roaring fire on a cold winter day where your family all gets to cuddle up in front of the flames to enjoy some traditional togetherness. It adds to the season when you know that everything is safe and sound. With that said, here are a few tips that you need to consider.

Wood burning fireplaces are beautiful but they are also responsible for 42% of all the fires that people have in their homes. First of all you need to be sure that the chimney is swept at least once a year by a professional, preferably at the beginning of the winter season. That same expert should be able to look after any cracks or loose mortar on the outside so the whole structure stays in excellent working order.

Remember that you need to burn the right material as well. Some wood is better suited to the fireplace than others and oak that has been stored and kept dry for at least six months is better than some pine products that contain more creosote, which is a flammable byproduct.

Big fires can be a problem for several reasons. They create more creosote which can build up and become a real fire risk. As well, the bigger the chimney the more heat is generated and that can actually crack the structure. The simple safety tip here is don’t overload and keep the logs on the grate as much as possible.

What you start the fire with matters as well. You need to use kindling and not any kind of flammable liquids that can quickly spiral out of control.
